When you Usually Lose yourself- Do This Instead

An in-the-moment reset

When you Usually Lose yourself-

Do This Instead

You're in the conversation.

Nothing dramatic has happened.

And still, you can feel it.

Your body shifts before your mind catches up.

Tension. Tightness. A pull to adjust, explain, or disappear.

You already know what this is.

When it starts — do this

Don't try to stop it.

Don't try to fix it.

Just interrupt the moment you usually disappear.

First —

Bring your attention into your body.

Where is it already happening?

Chest. Throat. Jaw. Stomach.

Don't scan. You'll know immediately.

Stay there for a moment longer than you normally would.

Not to change it.

Just to register it.

Then —

Slow down your next response.

There's usually a rush here. A pressure to react, smooth things over, or regain control.

Don't follow that immediately.

Let there be a small gap.

Even half a second is enough.

In that gap, notice:

What are you about to do automatically?

Soften.

Over-explain.

Agree.

Withdraw.

You don't need to stop yourself completely.

Just don't go all the way into it.

Let your response come from slightly more awareness than you normally would.

That's enough.

What to expect

This won't feel dramatic.

You won't suddenly feel calm or in control.

What you may notice is smaller:

A slight pause.

A fraction more space.

A moment where you didn't fully disappear.

That is the shift.

And it matters more than it seems.

Why this works

You've already understood your patterns.

This isn't happening at the level of thought.

The response lives in your body, and it runs faster than your thinking mind.

Which is why insight hasn't stopped it.

This interrupts the pattern where it actually begins.

If this felt different

Even slightly —

Then you already know this isn't about learning more.

It's about working at the level this is actually happening. If you want to go deeper into this work:

Understanding Isn't Enough
